Hillsboro Beach is a quiet, upscale residential community situated on a narrow barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The town is defined by its private atmosphere and the historic lighthouse that marks its southern boundary.
A Brief History
The town was named after the Earl of Hillsborough, who served as Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1793. It was originally incorporated in 1939, though it remained inactive until a special act of the Florida Legislature re-incorporated it in 1947. At the time of its early development, the town consisted of only 17 voters and a small collection of private homes and cottages. The iconic Hillsboro Lighthouse was established to guide mariners along the coast and remains a central historical landmark.
